Why Recess Is More Than Just Playing
Ask any student in Kenya what their favorite part of the school day is, and many will say "break time." That twenty or thirty minutes between lessons is not just for eating mandazi or sharing a chapo with a friend. It is a time to reset your brain, stretch your legs, and build real friendships. Whether you are playing rounders on the field, skipping rope, or simply sitting under a tree chatting, break time teaches social skills that no exam can measure.
Teachers also watch how students treat each other during recess—who shares their snack, who helps a fallen classmate get up, who includes a shy child in a game. These small acts of kindness create the heart of a school community. So next time the bell rings for break, put your books away fully, go outside, breathe the fresh air, and enjoy being a child. Learning happens everywhere, not just at a desk.
